One of the worst things you can be told about your leisure vehicle, is the dreaded word DAMP! Most of the time if caught it can be cured. However most water ingress cannot be smelt or seen until the damage is done, that is why annual servicing is so important.
Most water ingress starts without knowing. However regular checks can prevent costly repairs. Check the awning rails on your vehicle for signs of sealing damage, moss and dark patches which can indicate water damage. Also window rails and outer door frames. Rooflights can be a problem on earlier vehicles also. If in doubt talk to a specialist.
The old motto is true prevention is better than cure, when it comes to caravan and motorhome damp. The annual service is by far the best way of identifying, and stopping water ingress in its tracks
Water Ingress is a serious issue not least because of the cost! But the hidden problem is more serious as most caravans and even motor homes are constructed with a wooden frame which is sandwiched between the outer and inner wall. When the damp penetrates the outer seals then the wood frame will rot quickly unless the damp is treated early enough.
The Best Way to prevent damp from taking hold, is to take a few simple steps through the year. invest in a Kampa damp buster, for £13.95 and a bag of crystals. leave the damp Buster on the floor and it will soak up damp for months.opening the cupboards between holiday and propping the beds up helps the circulation of moisture. Also leaving the blinds up lets the natural light in. (cover seats to avoid sun bleach).
Winter is the most important time for your leisure vehicle, preparation is so important if you cannot get it under cover then take steps to protect your investment. Covers that protect the roof are useful and again keeping natural light in the vehicle will avoid mold and damp from being trapped in a dark vehicle. Following the tips in the previous paragraph are important also. (Don't leave windows on the latch this allows moisture to enter the vehicle)
Before...
This 2011 Caravan had some of the worst water ingress we had seen!
We started by stripping the front end and removing the rotten wood ready to dry out.
It just kept falling out!!
During...
Once the front end had been completely stripped of the old rotten wood, we could leave the vehicle inside our workshop to dry out.
This is turning into a mammoth task!
The prep...
Once stripped, we could measure up for the new wood!
We needed more than we bargained for!
The rebuild...
Once dry, we could proceed with the rebuild. We oversealed the Caravan and fitted the new wood inside.
We had to do some wallpapering too!
The finished product...
The completed front end! New front, new wallboard, new bulkhead. Now for a hoover and tidy up!
This was a big job! The hard work paid off! Happy customer!
